George was one of three sons of George and Julia Hance, of The Gore, Rayne, Essex, who gave their lives in the Great War.
His brothers who fell were:

Private Edward Elmer Hance of the 9th Bn., Essex Regiment. He was 26 when he fell on July 3rd 1916. He rests in GORDON DUMP CEMETERY, OVILLERS-LA BOISSELLE, Grave VI. E. 4.

and.....
Private Samuel Hance, of the 23rd Bn. Royal Fusiliers. He was 30 and was killed May 3rd 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the ARRAS MEMORIAL, Bay 3
