Frank W. Hamilton was born on 24 November1848 in Waterboro, York County, Maine, son of Porter Hamilton and Sally Hill.. At age 16 he went to work at the dry goods store of his uncle in Saco, Maine. In early1868, he and J. W. Milliken went to Boston to look for work and were employed for three months at the Wellington Brothers. Smith Barne came to Boston looking for a pair of men to work for the Hannah, lay & Company store in Traverse City. He hired the two and they traveled aboard the steamer Alleghany to Traverse City, arriving on the last day of May 1868. On 24 August 1870, Frank was a boarder in the Campbell Boarding House. He was working as a clerk in a dry goods store. He owned $550 in personal property. In 1873, he and Milliken entered into a partnership and formed Hamilton, Milliken, & Company.

Frank was married on 8 January 1877 in Glen Haven, Leelanau County, Michigan to Eva Rosman. Eva was born on 21 June 1845 in Westfield, Chautauqua County, New York, daughter of Alfred W. Rosman and Eliza J. Dascomb.

On 21 June 1880, Frank and Eva and two boarders- James W. Milliken and Charles Lambitt- lived in Traverse City. He was involved in the mercantile trade, with the two men employed with him. Eva was keeping house. In 1880, Hamilton and Milliken purchased the Hannah, Lay & Co. Clothing business and they built the block on the corner of Front and Cass Street in 1889. They divided the business in 1897, Hamilton taking the clothing portion and Milliken the dry goods.

Hamilton incorporated Hamilton Clothing Company on 1 December 1894. He was a Republican and a member of the Congregational Church. He was the first President of the Traverse City Business Men's Association, the Director of the First Northern Bank, and was the Treasurer of the Northern Michigan Insane Asylum.

In 1901, Hamilton was an Alderman in the First Ward in Traverse City. He served on the Ways and Means, Streets and Sidewalks, License, and Printing Standing Committees.

On 19 April 1910, Frank and Eva lived at 547 Washington Street. He was the proprietor of a clothing store. A servant named Anna Dahlen lived with them.

On 6 January 1920, the couple and Anna Dahlin continued to live at 546 Washington Street. Frank continued to work as a retail clothing store.

Eva died on 27 December 1920 in Traverse City.

On 5 April 1930, Frank lived at 547 Washington Street with Anna Dahlen. His home was valued at $8,000. He did not have a radio.
