Thomas N. Gautier's personal records and family papers were donated and are on file at the University of North Carolina.

Thomas N. Gautier was the commander of the United States naval forces at Wilmington, N.C., 1808-1813. The collection includes chiefly correspondence, 1884-1907, of the descendants of Thomas Nicholas Gautier and his wife, Eliza Ann Brown Gautier (1806-1870), concerning members of the Gautier and Galloway families of North Carolina and England. Earlier papers consist primarily of family records; and a letter book containing handwritten copies of letters that Gautier wrote as commander of the naval forces at Wilmington, N.C., 1808-1813.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

This marker is a bit of a puzzle. Church records indicate it was placed in 1838. On one side it says "In memory of Mary Ann Robertson of Baltimore, Md. consort of John Kirkpatrick of Mulawuney near Fintona, Ireland. On the opposite side it says DIED May 8th, 1837 AE. 22Y 4M 10D. In 1947, a century after the death of Thomas Nicholas Gautier addenda to the inscriptions on the monument were added with the consent of the Vestry of St. James Church to the monument erected in 1838. Added to the South side - John Monteith Kirkpatrick 1778-1842 Classmate and Comrade of Robert Emmet. Added to the North side - Thomas Nicholas Boudet Gautier Born Bristol, England 1764 Died Wilmington, NC 1848. Midshipman Royal British Navy, Lieutenant United States Navy Why there are 3 names on the monument is unknown to me at this time.

UPDATE 04/19/2015 - I believe I know WHO each of the people listed on the monument are, just not why they were all put on the same monument

THOMAS NICOLAS GAUTIER - Lt in the US Navy, son of Perre and Ann Manson Gautier

JOHN MONTEITH KIRKPATRICK - First husband of Lucy Jones Gautier , Thomas Nicolas Gautier's daughter

MARY ANN ROBERTSON - First wife of John Monteith Kirkpatrick

SPECULATION - John Kirkpatrick had the marker placed in 1838 to honor his first wife upon her death in 1837. Later his wife Lucy Jones Gautier Kirkpatrick had her deceased husband John Kirkpatrick, and father Thomas Nicolas Gautier's names added to honor them.
