William Melvin Gathers Sr., 76, of Sligo, died at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, at the Clarview Nursing Home in Sligo. Born Nov. 15, 1929, in Sligo, he was the son of Wray and Blanche Burns Gathers. Mr. Gathers was an U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for local coal and construction companies. He also worked part-time as a house painter. Mr. Gathers was a member of St. Richard Catholic Church in Rimersburg. He was married May 6, 1955, to Frances Swartzfager, who survives. Also surviving are five children, Susan Kifer of Rimersburg, William M. Gathers Jr. of Sligo, Mary Gathers of Logan, Utah, Patricia Stewart and her husband Jay of Sligo and Robert Gathers and his wife Cindy of Shippenville; six grandchildren, Kelly Hafer, Allen, Andrew and Sherry Kifer, Matthew Gathers and John Stewart. He is also survived by two brothers, Leo Gathers and his wife Louise and Connell Gathers and his wife Marilyn; a sister, Delores Winter; and a sister-in-law, Sally Gathers, all of Sligo. Mr. Gathers was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harold Gathers. There will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Richard Catholic Church in Rimersburg with the Rev. William Kuba, officiating. Interment will be in St. Eusebius Cemetery in East Brady. The Robert V. Burns Funeral Home in Clarion is in charge of arrangements. The family suggest memorials be made to the Sligo Volunteer Fire Department or a charity of choice. The Derrick, Feb. 25, 2006
