Daughter of Jacob & Margaret Krauss.
Wife of Emery L. Gathers
Obituary: "Killed By Lightning" --- Nothing has happened for a long time that so shocked the people of this community as the announcement that Mrs. Emery L. Gathers was killed by lightning Wednesday evening, August 2, 1922, and the expressions of sorrow were universal. Mr. and Mrs. Gathers had just completed milking their two cows and Mrs. Gathers took the milk to the cellar to separate it and put it away and Mr. Gathers went to the garage to attend to something about their car as they were talking of going out that evening. Almost out of a clear sky there was a sharp crash of thunder and a bolt of lightning struck the telephone pole in front of the house and the electricity followed the wire into the house and finally, after seeming to be in all parts of the house, found its way to the cellar and Mrs. Gathers received the shock, killing her instantly. She was not marked in any way except a small spot on the side of her face or forehead. Her daughter, Lena Ruth, who was standing by the sewing machine, had a mark on her limb from the lightning. But what a calamity! What a disaster! One moment a happy home, the next a broken home. How the heart of the entire community was stirred in sympathy for those who sustained the loss. Mrs. Mary Anna Gathers was the daughter of Jacob and Margaret Krauss and was born Sept. 15, 1869 in Piney township, Clarion county. She was united in marriage to Emery L. Gathers, Oct. 15, 1891, in Shippenville, Pa. Besides her husband she is survived by the following children: Glenn E. Gathers, Reidsburg; Miss Alice Gathers, teacher in New Kensington schools, and Miss Lena Ruth Gathers, at home. She also leaves two grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Chas. J. Krauss, Piney township; Mrs. H. H. Tice, Clarion; Mrs. N. E. Thompson, Mrs. H. C. Rhea, Mrs. C. W. Kemerer, all of Pittsburgh, and Mrs. L. C. Mates, Philadelphia. One brother preceded her in death. Mrs. Gathers was a noble spirited, fine Christian woman and held the love and esteem of all who knew her by reason of the graces and beautiful characteristics of her life which shone out in thought, word and deed. Her life was indeed a most exemplary one. Then, too, she was a model homemaker and was queen of a loving and lovely home. She was associated with the Zion Baptist Church of Reidsburg, and her funeral services were conducted Saturday, August 5th, by Rev. Wm. Wheeler, and the interment was made in the Reidsburg cemetery. Loving sympathy goes out from everybody to Mr. Gathers and his bereaved family. Clarion Democrat, Aug 10, 1922. Transcription courtesy of Paul Kifer.
