Howard J. "Spot" Gathers, 81, of 342 Madison St., Sligo, died at 4:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, in Clairview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center near Sligo. Born May 23, 1919, in Sligo, he was a son of Harry and Nannie Fox Gathers. Mr. Gathers was a dragline operator for 43 years for various coal companies in the Sligo area and retired in 1984 from C&K Coal Co. He was a member of the Sligo Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years. Mr. Gathers was a member of St. Petersburg Masonic Lodge, F. & A.M., and the New Castle Consistory. He was an avid hunter. Mr. Gathers was married May 27, 1944, to the former Evelyn McKinney, who survives. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Irene Gathers of Clarion; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gathers was preceded in death by five brothers, Wray Gathers, Russell Gathers, Bill Gathers, Kenneth Gathers and Ronald Gathers. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Varner Funeral Home, Sligo. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home with the Rev. David Holyan, pastor of the Sligo Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Clarion Cemetery. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Sligo Presbyterian Church, Sligo, 16255. The Derrick, February 5, 2001
