FRIDAY JANUARY 29, 1909

~Joseph F. Garwood died at his home in west Mansion street Saturday afternoon at 2:45 o'clock following a brief illness. Mr. Garwood had been detained from his duties as manager at the Western Union Telegraph office for several days as a result of illness contracted while delivering a message January 11th. Pneumonia developed, but hopes of his recovery were entertained. An attack of heart trouble caused his death. Mr. Garwood was 63 years of age and came to Marshall from Monroe thirty-two years ago to take charge of the Western Union office and has been its manager continuously since. Besides the wife, he is survived by one sister, Miss Carrie Garwood of Albion. The funeral services occured from his late residence at 3:00 o'clock Monday afternoon and were attended by many friends. Rev. Frederick Hewitt read the Episcopal service and the remains were placed in the vault at Oakridge. Mr. Garwood was a well and favorably known by his townspeople and his death is deeply mourned by the community.
