| Birth: | Nov. 12, 1828 | | Death: | Nov. 26, 1899 | He was an officer in one of the first companies (Co I, 38th Regiment NC Troops) formed in our county when the Civil War broke out, but resigned his commission shortly thereafter to return home as we had been left with no doctor to care for the sick. He became one of our first historians and his writings & medical office journals are prized by our community. He was an ancestor to Gov. O. Max Gardner, one of the Shelby dynasty.
