Tazwell was the son of Carey Gilbert and Betsy Reed of Poplar Hill, and eventually Prospect, in Giles County, TN. Per family history, he inherited from his parents a parcel of land in Prospect that was not terribly productive farming-wise. Tazwell married Prospect resident Eudora Russell on 6 Dec 1883. Given the poor farmland, the family struggled.

All three of their sons would eventually leave the immediate area. Eldest son Bob moved to Athens, AL, and younger sons Russell and Lyle moved to Akron, Ohio. Daughter Rosa Lee Case and Mary Brazier remained in Prospect, and Mary would live out her life in the homestead. Daughters Sally Campbell and Catherine Chambers would settle in Alabama.

Tazwell and Eudora also had two children who didn't live to adulthood. Son Ivan died as a two year old in 1895 after he was scalded by pulling a boiling pot of coffee (or maybe water) on himself off the stove. This story was related by daughters of Russell Gilbert. Curiously, no one in the family knew about daughter Rebecca who also died as an infant. Her gravestone was found in the Reed Cemetery with her grandparents and brother Ivan.

Tazwell died of mouth cancer just after turning 80 years old.
