Wife of Capt. William H. Face.

From the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot of November 5, 1899:

"FACE - At her residence, corner Manteo and Olney Roads, Ghent, Saturday, November the 4th at 5 o'clock p.m., SARAH E., widow of the late Captain William H. Face, in the 72d year of her age.

"The funeral will take place MONDAY AFTERNOON, November the 6th, at 2 o'clock from her late residence. Friends and acquaintances respectfully invited to attend. (Philadelphia and Washington papers copy.)"

From the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot of November 7, 1899:

"The obsequies of Mrs. Sarah E. Face, relict of the late Captain William H. Face, were held from the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. James E. Wright, corner of Olney Road and Manteo Avenue, Ghent, at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and was largely attended. The servies were conducted by Rev. C.W. Maxwell, of Colley Memorial Presbyterian Church, assisted by Revs. E. Wales and F. Boulden, of the Episcopal Church. The interment was in Elmwood."

Sarah Face's great-grandfather, Lt. Jonathan Barrett, was an officer in the Virginia Navy during the American Revolution. He was captured by the British and died in confinement in New York.

Two of her great-great-uncles – Lt. Jonathan Barrett's brothers John and James – were also officers in the Virginia Navy. Capt. John Barrett commanded the Galley Hero, on which James served as a Boatswain. For a short time, James commanded Liberty as its Acting Captain.
