Catherine Heffley was born in Philadelphia in 1805 and came of a sturdy Dutch family of that State.
She possessed all the energy and thrift of her race and imparted these qualities to her five children, whom she brought up and educated in admirable fashion. This was no small accomplishment, as she was widowed at the age of 35 upon the death of her first husband, Edward Face.
All of the children were still at home when their father died, the oldest being only 13 years old: William Haley Face, Edward Webster Face, Vandalia E. Face Ewell (later the wife of Jesse Ewell), Virginia Face Davis (later the wife of Larkin Davis, of Norfolk) and Samuel A. Face.
Mrs. Face later married Capt. James Bennett, who was well loved by his new family.
She died in 1876 at the age of 71.
At her request, the remains of her first husband were removed from Florida and buried at her side in one of the family plots at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk.
