Clair was the pilot of the B-17G #43-38178 (FR-P) that was assigned to the 379th Bomb Group, 525th Bomb Squadron named Seattle Sue. Six crew members were KIA and two parachuted to capture but survived WW II.

Krimice Memorial to killed American airmen
Stands in the square at the Lobkowiczs Castle wall in Krimice in the Czech Republic. Beneath it are walled fragments of aircraft in the form of duralumin plates of the B-17G Flying Fortress Bomber. In the center of the memorial is the insignia of the American Eighth Air Force. On the sides are the names of ten fallen American airmen who died during the raid on the Pilsen Skoda Armaments Factory on April 25, 1945. Five of the men were crew members of "Seattle Sue" 43-38178 namely: First Lt Clair W. Evans, pilot – Sgt Victor L. Stewart, tail gunner – Sgt Robert J. Dobson, ball turret gunner – Sgt William E. Fanning, radio operator – F/O Leland E. Slane, bombardier. Others in B-17G 44-83447 (No Name) were Second Lt Henry G. Moss, bombardier – S/Sgt Glenn R. Walling, engineer – S/Sgt Francis H. Kelly, ball turret gunner. Unknown plane S/Sgt William F Meikle, rear gunner – D. L. Fay

Here is a photo of a makeshift memorial about 20 meters to the east of the crash site that was made of a piece of the wing. The body of either Dobson or Stewart was found there after the crash. The inscription etched into this with an American Flag says, "Thank You Very Much". The Czech inscription says, "Never forget - They gave their lives."
