Birth: Aug. 8, 1880, Austria
Death: 1938

Postal clerk turned Prohibition agent in New York City. After immigrating to America at the age of 15, he became an American Citizen a few years later. He was one half of the Izzy and Moe duo which started in 1920 (neither one had any detective or police training). Unpopular with both Law Enforcement (who felt they were making a mockery of the law) and bootleggers (because they never took bribes), they had a record of 4,392 arrests with a 95% conviction rate. They were famous for using disguises including Texas Ranchers, collage students, opera singers, and an elderly Yiddish couple to make their arrests. In order to save the evidence, they would pretend to drink, but actually be pouring the drink into a flask through a funnel. In 1925, their jobs were eliminated due to “reorganization”. Eventually became partners selling insurance, sometimes to people they had previously arrested. Their work was depicted in the TV-movie “Izzy and Moe” starring Jackie Gleason and Art Carney.
