THE DEATH OF SARAH DOWNING
Mrs Sarah M Downing, one of the oldest and best known women of West Lafayette, died at the family residence 324 Wood Street, at 5:30 o'clock yesterday morning. three and a half years ago she fell at her home and broke her right hip, and since that time had been an invalid. Mrs Downing was born in Ohio March 16, 1830, the daughter of Mr and Mrs William Pierce. In 1854 she was married to Rev George W Hamilton, a Methodist minister, who died at Stockwell in 1870. Mr Hamilton at different times was pastor at Thorntown, Valparaiso, Crawfordsville and Stockwell. Thirty years ago Mrs downing was Married to Martin H Downing, who survives. For a short time they lived on a farm near Otterbein, moving from there to West Lafayette. Mrs Downing was a devout member of the West Lafayette Methodist church and prominent in all forms of church work. All through her long siege of suffering she never complained, but bore up with true Christian fortitude. She was a woman of the highest character, loving and sympathetic, and had the esteem of every one who was fortunate enough to know her. One son, Leonidas G Hamilton, of Indianapolis, survives. He was at the bedside when death came. At one time he was president of the Hamilton Furniture company in this city. The funeral will be conducted from the family residence at 9:30 o'clock Thursday morning, Dr T J Bassett officiating. The burial will be at Stockwell and the burial will be private. While the service will be public, they will be held at such an early hour that friends can view the remains at the residence any time today.
