John Dingwall, died at Onawa last Sunday. He came to this county about 1869. locating on Silver Lake where the Bennett Ranch is now situated. For about fourteen years his cottage, thatched after the manner of the humble homes in his native Scotland, was the abode of hospitality and good cheer. Mr. Dingwall was a man of unusual intelligence, was well up in literature of the period, versed in ancient history and had a good deal of scientific knowledge. He read and philosophized a great deal about geology. Classic poetry was often on his tongue. He loved to meet in gentle discussion any man of parts and his bright mind and quaint speech made the situation interesting for a companion. The deceased was for nearly four years a union soldier. He was a good citizen and a patriot always. He leaves a devoted wife and a large family of girls and boys to mourn his loss, and many friends will hold in kindly remembrance the virtues of this sturdy Scot.

*Obituary is published in the Spirit Lake Beacon, Jan. 7, 1898.
