Early on Monday, June 20th, 2005, the Lane County Search and Rescue team found the bodies of two Eugene cousins who disappeared while playing in a pond in west Eugene.
Nicholas Steven Davis, 13, and Britton Scott Shephard-Davis, 15, lived together in a nearby trailer park. The teenagers had been fishing and playing with two other youths Sunday afternoon in a brushy pond area known as Golden Garden Park when they tried to swim across part of the pond, witnesses told the Lane County sheriff's office.
When they were about halfway across the pond, one boy went under the water, followed by the second, investigators aid. A 9-year-old who was with the group went for help, finding a fisherman at a nearby pond who called 9-1-1.
Divers worked into the night before finding the boys 6 feet apart in about 10 feet of water, sheriff's officials said. They were about 50 feet from shore. The younger boy had just completed seventh grade at Prairie Mountain School. A Bethel School District spokesman said he didn't know where the 15-year-old went to school.
