The 1800 United States Census indicates that in the Abel Daugherty (listed as Doughety [sic]) household in Centre Township in Centre County, Pennsylvania, there was 1 free white male and 1 free white female between the ages of 26 and 45, and 4 free white males and 1 free white female under the ages of 10. Presumably Abel and his wife Mary had 5 children, or were at the very least were raising 5 children at the time.

Elma "Birdie" (Hess) Hoover wrote to her sister, Blanche (Hess) Williams Dana that their mother, Charlotte Amanda Daugherty Hess, corresponded with a married brother of Robert who had a family. Robert Boston Daugherty reported that his father Anson had said about his grandfather Robert that "Robert was an orphan, raised by a German family, and spoke only German up to about twelve years of age. That is, they thought he was an orphan, but he wasn't." (Pine Glen, PA. Families and Kin, p. 13)

In addition to their son Robert, Abel and Mary Catharine, had daughters, Sophia and Fanny. (Lycoming County Genealogical Society)
