Former Fire Chief Chester Davis dies

Chester A. Davis, a native of Wickenburg and the community's fire chief from 1955 to 1975, passed away March 4 at his residence in Wickenburg.

He was 87.

Chester was born (Jan. 9, 1920) and raised in Wickenburg and attended school here. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1945. He was co-owner and operator of the Wickenburg Mine Supply and very active in the community.

Besides his 20-year term as fire chief, he was also a member of the American Legion, Elks Lodge, and served on the Town Council (elected in 1954) as well as the Hospital Board.

He had actually joined the local fire department in 1950 and was elected assistant fire chief in November of 1953. He began his 20 years of service as fire chief in January of 1955. He retired in March of 1975.

Chester is survived by his daughters Marilyn Bays and Carolyn Jerauld of Wickenburg; stepsons Chuck Welsh (Rose) of Yarnell and Ron Welsh and Jan Raphael of Chino Valley; brother Donald Davis of Tucson; sisters Mary Ellen Basham and Tommie Ann McFarland of Wickenburg; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by wife Ella Davis in 1982; wife Millie Davis in January of this year; and a son Donald Davis in 1970.

Chester's maternal grandparents, E.A. and Annie E. Davis, died when a tanker truck crashed into their home and erupted into flames in downtown Wickenburg on Nov. 27, 1934. Chester had been sleeping in the small house next door to the home in which his grandparents died.
