US Air Force Maj Stephen Howard Cuthbert, Vietnam Veteran and native of Oakland, California.

US Air Force Major Stephen Howard Cuthbert was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Air Force, MAJ Cuthbert served our country until November 3rd, 1978 in North Vietnam. He was 35 years old and was married to Jane G Vonberckefe Cuthbert. It was reported that Stephen died when his plane crashed. His body was recovered. Stephen was born on June 19th, 1943 in Oakland, California. MAJ Cuthbert is on panel 01W, line 052 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C.

I was in the same unit, 523rd TFS and knew Steve as a very fine individual and a very fine pilot. I was saddened at your loss and to this day think of you whenever I remember the time spent in Southeast Asia. I have traveled out to Washington and paid my respects to you and the rest of our unit that is on the WALL. Smoked a cigar and shed tears as I sat there and thought of each and everyone of you. "May God hold you in his hands forever." I will never forget you! Keith Licht.

This remembrance is from Captain Jerry Gipson stationed with Steve in the 523rd TFS at Udorn. I flew several missions with Steve, he was a great pilot and a good friend. I recall vividly the day he went down. I think of him and his family often. I took a rubbing of his name when I visited the Wall a few years ago. I would like to hear from family and other friends of Steve's, both military and otherwise. I can be contacted at [email protected]. Captain Jerry F. Gipson.

My name is Bill Thaler. I was stationed with Steve in the Philippines and was stationed at Ubon when Steve was shot down. Steve was marking a target for me when he was shot down. It must have been small arms fire since there were no tracers or other evidence of ground fire. Steve and his GIB both bailed out, and two good chutes were seen. No radio contact was ever established with either man even though we worked the area for several hours until dark. Steve's pitter was a POW and returned from North Vietnam with Steve's wedding band. Obviously, the North Vietnamese know what happened to Steve Cuthbert; but, to my knowledge, he was always listed as MIA. Bill Thaler.

Maj Stephen Howard Cuthbert served as a Major with 523rd Tactical Fighter Squadron, 432nd Tactical Fighter Wing, 7th Air Force, United States Air Force, Vietnam.

He was awarded US Air Force Pilots Wings Insignia, The Purple Heart Medal, The Air Medal with Devices, The National Defense Service Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Vietnam Campaign Medal and The Vietnamese Gallantry Cross Unit Citation.
