During a group training flight aboard Beech AT-7 #42-2469, the pilot of his aircraft diverted in an attempt to avoid rising thunderstorms but inadvertently entered an intense storm and lost control and crashed near Hammond, Louisiana. All five airmen aboard were killed.

He is the son of Mr. Glen E. & Mrs. Eva Cooper of 417 Santa Fe Street in Chillicothe, Illinois, and is a 1940 graduate of Chillicothe H.S., and did 2 years at the Unv. of Illinois School of Engineering, and enlisted at Chanute Field, Illinois on April 22, 1942, and did his training at Maxwell Field, Alabama, and at Helena, Arkansas.
