Betty (Parks) Classen was born: Betty Belle Jeffryes on January 16, 1928 in Winterset, Iowa, to Arthur and Nellie Jeffryes from a family of 11 children.
Betty died of complications of Alzheimer’s at Legacy Nursing Care in Waukee on October 14, 2016 at the age of 88.
She graduated from DSM East High School in 1946. She worked for the State of Iowa Department of Transportation where she retired from.
Betty married Raymond Parks on April 15, 1948, where they had a daughter, Rebecca. Ray died from cancer in 1978.
Betty remarried December 8, 1979 to Leo Classen who then died in 2013.
She loved traveling with her husband, Leo after retiring. She also volunteered at the Mercy Hospital gift shop.
The last 6 years she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She resided at Village of Legacy Memory Care in Waukee with her husband, Leo before his death and her sister, Rose.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Getman; grandson, Brian Getman; sisters, Lenita Goodman, Dorothy Roberts, and Rose Fleming; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ray and Leo; parents, Arthur and Nellie Jeffryes; brothers, Lloyd Bernard and Leonard Jeffryes; and sisters, Mary Johnson and Geraldine Shaw.
Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m., with funeral service to begin at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Interment will follow at Glendale Cemetery.
