Doris Evangelene Chaney Childress, age 81, formerly of 201 Franklin Turnpike, died Wednesday morning, March 9, 2011 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she had been a resident and after a decline in health for the past ten years.

Mrs. Childress was born on January 21, 1930 in Danville, a daughter of the late Yancey Watson Chaney and the late Mary Alice Clark Chaney. She had lived her entire life in Danville where she was a supervisor/operator for over forty two years for C & P Telephone Company. She was a lifetime member of the Verizon Pioneers. She was a member of the Pocahontas and also a member of North Main Baptist Church. She was a member of the Danville Women Bowling Association Hall of Fame. She was married to Samuel "Sam" Childress, who predeceased her.

Mrs. Childress is survived by six nephews, Dan W. Adkins and wife, Lavernne of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jimmy Adkins and wife, Brenda of Holly Springs, N.C., John P. Adkins and wife, Norma of Richmond, Lynn Y. Adkins and wife, Diane of Chatham, Terry Childress and wife, Bonnie of Lynchburg and Dr. David Childress, DDS of Danville and a number of great nieces and great nephews. Mrs. Childress was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Chaney Adkins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 pm. Saturday, March 12, 2011 from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Reverend Mike Wiles officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening, March 11, 2011 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.
