Birthdate from an old transcript before marker deteriorated as badly was Aug, 8, 182?

Charles B. Byars enlisted for a period of three years in the Confederate A rmy
on January 28, 1863 at Grassy Pond, SC. He was in Company K of the 18th
Regiment SC Infantry.

On the Company Muster Roll for Nov. & Dec., 1863, Sgt. Bridges reported hi m
absent on special furlough since Dec. 23, 1863. He was last paid by Capt.
Lemmons on October 31, 1863.

The Company Muster Roll for March and April 1864 reports him present and l ast
paid Dec. 31, 1863.

The Company Muster Roll for May to Aug. 31, 1864, reports him present and
last paid Mar. 1, 1864.

The Company Muster Roll for Sept. & Oct. 1864 reports him absent on 30 day s
furlough from Oct. 25, 1964, and last paid Feb. 29, 1864.

The Company Muster Roll for Nov. & Dec. 1864 reports him present and last
paid Feb. 29, 1864.

The Company Muster Roll for Jan. & Feb. 1865 reports him present and last
paid Aug. 31, 1864.

There is a record of a payment of $50 on April 8, 1863.

Finally, C. B. Byars, Private, Co. K, 18 Reg't South Carolina Vols. Appear s
on a List of Prisoners of War belonging to the Army of Northern Virgini a, who
have been this day surrendered by General Robert E. Lee, C.S.A., commandin g
said Army, to Lieut. Genl. U.S. Grant, commanding Armies of the United Sta tes.
Paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.
List dated Wallace's Brigade, April 10, 1865.
