Valda Melford Brooks, son of Margaret and Melford Brooks, was [part of sentence missing] Iowa and died Aug. 17, 1964 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital following an illness of four weeks.
Mr. Brooks was reared and lived in the Auburn area 33 years. On June 14, 1930, he was united in marriage to Zetta C. Esslinger at Nashua. In 1931, the couple came to the Iowa Great Lakes region where Mr. Brooks and his father developed the Elm-Brooks Country Club and Brooks Beach Resort on East Okoboji Lake.
He was an active member of the Spirit Lake Methodist church, served on the Okoboji town council, was a Mason, a one time member of the Iowa Protective Association, a member of the Professional Golf Association and had membership in many other organizations devoted to the betterment of the lakes region.
Survivors include: his wife, Zetta; one son, John Melford Brooks of Arnolds Park, and a sister, Mrs. Muriel Rich of Oakland, Calif.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 20, at the Methodist chruch in Spirit Lake with the Rev. Trevor Baskerville officiating. Special music was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Redington. Pallbearers were William R. Higgins, Jr., Dr. Green, Ralph Thompson, Richard Manogue, Earl Thompson and William Bradburn.
Interment was in Okoboji cemetery at Arnolds Park.
