Gustavus died from wounds suffered during the Civil War Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.

He served in 8th Infantry Battalion, Company B and C. Enlisted on August 9, 1862 in Calhoun, GA and served through August 1864. Was absent in hospital from wounds received at Kennesaw Mountain on June 27, 1864.

8th Infantry Battalion was organized with six companies during the early spring of 1862 at Savannah, Georgia. Some of the men were from Adairsville and Thornburgh, and Gordon County. For a time the unit served in the Department of South Carolina, Georiga, and Florida, then it was assigned to Gist's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. After the operations in North Mississippi, it fought with the army from Chickamauga to Nashville and ended the war in North Carolina. This battalion contained 232 men and 183 arms in December, 1863, and was included in the surrender on April 26, 1865. The field officers were Lieutenant Colonels Asahel Littlefield, Leroy Napier, Jr., J.T. Reid, and Zachariah L. Watters; and Majors John W. Gray, B.F. Hunt, and Edward F. Morgan.

The name Kennesaw is derived from the Cherokee Indian "Gah-nee-sah" meaning cemetery or burial ground.

Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield is a 2,923 acre National Battlefield that preserves a Civil War battleground of the Atlanta Campaign. The battle was fought from June 19, 1864 until July 2, 1864. Sherman's army consisted of 100,000 men, 254 guns and 35,000 horses. Johnston's army had 63,000 men and 187 guns. Over 67,000 soldiers were killed, wounded and captured during the Campaign.
