Viola Besco, long time teacher, age 93, died Friday, March 18, 2016 at Calvin Community.

Viola was born on a farm near Maryville, MO. At an early age her family moved to a farm near Blockton in Taylor County. This farm was homesteaded by her great grandfather in 1853. Then the family moved to a farm near Clearfield, IA. Because of her father's failing health, they moved to Conway. Viola graduated from Conway High School in 1941 and from Missouri Northwest University of Maryville, MO.

Viola retired in 1988 after teaching for 45 years. She taught in the following places in Iowa: country school in Taylor County, Kent, Sidney, Winterset and Des Moines. She taught at Stowe School in Des Moines for 29 years.

Viola took care of the country school at the Iowa State Fair for 20 years.

She was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of National Education Association, Des Moines Area Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, TTT, Wesley Acres Guild, 50 year member of Eastern Star, Westover Club, Questers, and auxiliary to Sons of the Union of Veterans of Civil War.

Viola enjoyed her plants, crafts and traveling. She traveled to all 50 states, and had been to Europe twice.

She is survived by her cousins, Jim (Katy) Brown of Garland, TX and Kathy Peek of Plano, TX.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at Immanuel United Methodist Church where visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. A graveside service will be 3 p.m., Wednesday at the Platteville Cemetery between Bedford and Blockton, Iowa.
