John W. Bean was the son of Thomas H. Bean and Lucinda Finch of Jefferson County, Illinois. He married Elizabeth T. Morgan in Washington Co., Illinois on 7 June 1853. He and Elizabeth had eight children: Thomas H., Asa, Charles Edward, Mary E., Alice, John N., Martha, and Benaja/Benjamin.

Between 1870 and 1880 John W. and Elizabeth separated or divorced. In the 1880 census of Vergennes Township, Jackson County, Illinois, Delitha Bean is listed as head with children Charles E., Mary E., John N., and Benaja as well as her mother-in-law Lucinda Bean. In the 1880 census of Jasper Township, Taney Co., Missouri, John W. Bean and wife Catherine are listed in the household of Lucinda Williamson, sister-in-law, along with Peter Mills, laborer.

Elizabeth T. Morgan Bean (sometimes listed as Telitha, Elitha, or Tabitha) died sometime after the 1910 census when she was then living with her son Charles Edward in Vergennes Twp., Jackson Co., IL.

By 1910 John W. Bean and Catherine Morgan Bean were living in Prairie Twp., Carroll Co., Arkansas with their two sons: George W. and Amos L.
