Joseph C. Barta of Scappoose passed away peacefully on May 27, 2006 at the age of 90 of congestive heart failure. Joe was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on February 1, 1916 to Joseph and Philomena (Metesky) Barta and was the youngest of 11 children. In 1933 at the age of 17, he was invited to move to Scappoose and work on his uncle Rosa's farm, joining his favorite brother, Mike. He graduated from Scappoose High School in 1934.

In 1940 he married Helen Beno and during their 65 years of marriage, residing in Scappoose, they raised eight daughters and one son. Joe worked in the shipyards before serving in the Army during WWII in Okinawa.

In 1946 he embarked on a 37-year career at Pennwalt Chemical Corporation. During these years, he also pursued his passion of owning and managing a fruit orchard with Mike. The Barta fruit was locally heralded for its prize-winning quality. He enjoyed gardening, walking, reading, and exploring his heritage during two visits to relatives in the Czech Republic. Joe was a long time member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.

He is survived by his loving wife, Helen, daughters: Janice Parker, Carol Galloway, Mary Thomas, Elaine Sawyer, Geralyn Yost, Marge McWade, DeAnne Coppenger, son; Joe, 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Father Joe Beno and sister-in-law Ann Barta as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter Joanie.

The family is grateful for the compassionate care provided by the Providence St. Vincent Hospice team and the caregivers from Visiting Angels and Adams & Gray. Memorial Contributions may be made in Joe's memory to Providence Child Center -
