BARNARD, Donald M., age 79, died at Evanston Regional Hospital on March 24, 2003. He was born on December 26, 1923 in Evanston, Wyoming, the son of Frederick Swain and Ethel Mae (Ranney) Barnard. He was educated in the Evanston Schools. He was a cheerleader, senior class president, and best all round boy in the class of 1941. He graduated in 1949 from the University of Wyoming with a master's degree in Agronomy. He married Lela Marr Atkinson on June 12, 1947 in Laramie, Wyoming. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on August 24, 1965. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a P 51 fighter pilot. He was assigned to the 20th fighter group; 79th fighters squadron at Kings Cliffe, England. He flew 30 missions over Germany. He was released from active duty in April 1946, and then served in the Air Force Reserve out of Hill Field, and retired a Lt. Colonel. He was assistant County Agent of Goshen County and was employed as a fireman with the Union Pacific Railroad. He then began a teaching career in Evanston, Wyoming that lasted for 24 years. Donald was a devoted father of five children; Paul, Bruce, Kathleen, Donell, and Mark. He had 28 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren. He enjoyed the grandchildren's activities and never missed a ball game, a concert, or school play. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He is survived by his wife, Lela of 55 years, of Evanston, Wyoming; Sons: Paul Robert (Joan) Barnard of Evanston, Wyoming; Bruce Ranney (Janine) Barnard of Evanston, Wyoming; Mark Ellis (Karen) Barnard of Newberg, Oregon; Daughters: Kathleen (Doug) Brown of Layton, Utah; Donell (Will) Atkinson of Evanston, Wyoming; Brother: Richard Barnard of Omaha, Nebraska; Sister: Doris Bath of Rock Springs, Wyoming. He is preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Michael Macy Barnard. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 28, at 11:00 a.m. at the Evanston L.D.S. South Stake Center. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 6:00 till 8:00 p.m. at Crandall Funeral Home and one hour prior to the services on Friday, at the Stake Center. Interment will be held at Evanston Cemetery.
