Jean Hippolyte Bard [dit 'Jambard'], commonly known as Paul Bard, was born on the 15th of July, 1791, in Rivière-Ouelle, Québec. He was christened on the day of his birth in the parish church (Notre-Dame-de-Liesse) under the name 'Jean Hypolitte Jembarde' [sic].

In 1811, at age 20, Paul married sixteen-year-old Julie Dubé (a fourth cousin) and together the couple had at least eleven children — but possibly more. At some point, probably in the 1830s, Paul and Julie emigrated from Canada to French-
ville, Maine, where their children eventually married and their family grew to include countless grandchildren.

Paul passed away at age 66 in Frenchville and was buried there in the St. Luce parish cemetery. He was survived by his wife, to whom he'd been married for 46 years, but the date of her death (and her final resting place) is unknown at this time.
