The marker, which was placed in the 1990's, is incorrect.

Date of death is still unknown, but it has been narrowed down (through court filed transaction documents) to between October 1886 and November 1888. After acquiring 80 acres in Blount County in 1884, it appears that he sold all his land located in Cherokee County through different transactions between Jan. 1885 and Oct. 1886.

The 1850, 1860 and 1880 censuses (the only ones located with his name along with his wife Rachel) all show his name as Hezekiah P. Bailey, but family stories relate that he went by the name "Jim Bailey, Sr.". Further, his youngest son's name was James M. Bailey, so it's possible that his son was commonly called Jim, Jr., but that has not been verified.

One might deduce that his middle initial "P" stood for "Pinkney" since one of his grandsons was named Hezekiah Pinkney Bailey, but since his other two oldest grandsons' names also began with "P" (Porter and Proncey), it would be anyone's guess until someone can locate a verifying document.
