Robert G. Beatty, 87 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, Ohio, passed away Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, at the New Life Hospice Residential Center in Lorain, Ohio, following a brief illness. He was born April 28, 1919, in Vanderbilt. Robert graduated from Dunbar High School. He had made his home in Amherst for the past 32 years. Robert served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he received the Good Conduct Medal. He was employed as a shipping crate operator at U.S. Steel Corp. in Lorain for 35 years before retiring in 1981. Robert was a member of the South Amherst First United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the South Amherst American Legion Post No. 197 and the Elyria Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie No. 431. Robert was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and enjoyed doing yard work. Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Marian G. McGurk-Beatty (nee: Akers); his stepson, Pat McGurk, of Pennsylvania; his cousin, Betty Karpel; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his stepsons, John McGurk in 2002 and Mike McGurk in 2005; by his brothers, John Beatty and Wayne Beatty; and by his parents, William and Ada Beatty (nee: Shelkey). Funeral services were held in Amherst. The Rev. Gary Lunsford, pastor of South Amherst First United Methodist Church, officiated. Robert was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to South Amherst First United Methodist Church, 201 W. Main St., South Amherst, Ohio 44001 or CHP Regional Foundation/New Life Hospice, 3700 Kolbe Rd., Lorrain, Ohio 44053.
