Lewis E. Akeley was hired as an instructor by USD in 1887 and participated in commencement ceremonies for the first three University graduates in 1888. As long-time dean of the College of Engineering, Akeley inspired generations of scientists, engineers, and physicists to excel in their chosen professions. When the engineering college was closed in 1933, Dean Akeley was 72 years old, yet he continued to be a part-time professor of philosophy for another 20 years. As Dean Akeley gave a lifetime of service to USD, members of the Akeley Society are honored for their cumulative lifetime giving of $100,000 to $249,999.
