Dewey Woodrow "Earl" Adkins
Birth: Sep. 13, 1898
Lincoln County
West Virginia, USA
Death: Mar. 22, 1963
Cabell County
West Virginia, USA

Dewey Woodrow Adkins was my Grandpa and was the son of Isaiah Frances Adkins and Lena Spears. He married Peachie Mae Miller and had six children from that marriage. Dewey Edwin, Wetzel Wayne, Robert Widdie, Albert Alvin and my father Millard Musco, and the last son died 2 hours after birth and Peachie Mae two days later. After the death of Grandma he started going by the name of Earl. He later married Gladys America Perkins. He had three more children from his marriage to gladys and adopted a nice of Gladys's sister. She was Elizabeth Susan Marie. One of dewey and glady's son's Woodrow Isaiah is in the Adkins cemetery also.

After the death of his wife, Dewey went to Oak Hill ,Ohio for awhile and thought maybe he would stay with his dad awhile. But his mother Lena was going to have no part of it and he was told to leave because she had called the Sheriff and they were on there way. And She didn't want him around because he had walked out of prison when he was on a road gang and they were looking for him. Then settled in Huntington area in West Virginia in the vicinity of Proctor in the later part of 1926. There he worked in a Copper Factory and worked in a sreal mill. Then he moved across the Guyandotte river and rented a few places on 8th avenue before finally buying a small house on the same street. He worked with farm machinery in Harts Creek and was able to get a job along with two of his brothers Uly and Fenzie at the C&O Rail Road shops across the tracks in Huntington. Dewey worked there as a machinest and pipe fitter. The Perkins family lived across the street and just down the way a piece .This is where he had met James Monroe's daughter, Gladys America Perkins. Her and Dewey later married in 1928 and they raised three of Dewey's children; Robert, Wetzel and Albert. His other two boys Edwin and Millard Musco would be raised by Peachie's parents, Millard and Alpha Miller. Dewey and Gladys wouldn't have children for 12 years, Long after Dewey's sons had left home. By the 1930's money was scarce because of the Great Depression, so people did what they could to make their lives happy. Movies were hot, parlor games and board games were popular. People gathered around radios to listen to the Yankees. Young people danced to the big bands. Franklin Roosevelt influenced Americans with his Fireside Chats. In the Great Depression the American dream had become a nightmare.
