A graveside service for former McMinnville resident Jack Zumwalt of Carrizozo, N.M., was held Friday in the Carrizozo Cemetery.

Mr. Zumwalt died Aug. 6, 2002, in Carrizozo. He was 84.

He was born Feb. 1, 1918, in Nogal, N.M.

He and Elouise Graves were married in September 1936 in Nogal. The couple divorced in 1957.

He moved to McMinnville in 1949 and worked as a tool and die-maker for Field Emission Research Institute, McMinnville.

He and Cora Agee were married May 11, 1962, in McMinnville. The couple moved from McMinnville to New Mexico in 1968.

Mr. Zumwalt was a tool and die-maker for General Electric in Albuquerque, N.M. He later worked for a potash mining operation in Carlsbad, N.M., until he retired in 1980.

In 1985 he moved back to McMinnville, where he lived until 1999. He then moved to Carrizozo. He belonged to the Church of Christ in New Mexico.

He was a self-taught guitarist who played at barn dances and on radio and television. Family members said he was a friend to everyone he met.

Survivors include two sons, Floyd Zumwalt of McMinnville and Warren Sand Zumwalt of Spokane, Wash.; two daughters, Betty Zane LaBonte of Tacoma, Wash., and Lynnette Zumwalt of Fort Worth, Texas; three stepdaughters, Sharon Leopold of Salem, Mary Lou Piper of Oregon City and Ramona Payne of Carrizozo; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1999 and by a grandson, Barry Blair.
