Johanna F. Bernau
Johanna Frieda Ziemann Bernau was born near Berlin, Germany on September 13, 1824. On Oct 24, 1849 she was united in marriage to (Carl) August Bernau. This union was blessed with six children, two of whom died in infancy; one in Germany, and the other during the voyage to America, being buried in the ocean. The family emigrated to this country in 1858, the journey in a sailing vessel, taking 13 weeks. They first made their home in Clayton county, but came to Madison county in 1872, settling on the farm now known as the Bernau homestead. Here Mr. Bernau died February 22, 1883. After the death of her husband Mrs. Bernau made her home with her son William After he too had passed away, she lived with her daughter Mrs. Anna Kneuper and during the last year and a half, after the death of Mrs. Kneuper, she found a home with her only remaining daughter, Mrs. Wishmier and her son, William.
Grandma Bernau fell asleep in Jesus Thursday, March 16th, being 97 years, 6 months 3 days old. Her life has always been that of a Christian. In early childhood she was received into fellowship with Christ and His church by the sacrament of baptism and later in confirmation, she renewed her baptismal covenant and promised faithfulness to her God and the Lutheran church. And by the grace of God she has kept her vow, remaining a child of God and a faithful member of the Lutheran church all her life. She was a loving wife, a good mother, a diligent worker and in all respects all that a Christian wife and mother should be. Funeral services were conducted at the Lutheran church in Jefferson township by Rev. C. Lillie and the body laid to rest in the Lutheran cemetery.
