Brother of Albert, Carl, Henry, Ferdinand, Adeline (Brown), Ida (Markley), Frederick Zessin and Alesa (Markley).
Husband of Ernestine Rathel, whom he married on May 4, 1882.
Father of Nine children: Ferdenand, Louise (Dittberner), Rosetta (Boysen), Oscar, William, Herman, Lillie (Sattler), Bertha (Eucker) and Albert Zessin.

Death of Herman Zessin
Herman Zessin died at his home southwest of this city Christmas night after a long and lingering illness. He has been a great sufferer for a number of years and death was not unexpected.
He was born in Pommeri, Germany, on the 26th day of May, 1853, and came to America in 1870 locating at Kankakee, Ill., where he stayed but six months when he came to Madison county where he has since resided. He was married in 1882 to Miss Rathal. Eight Children, four Boys and four girls, who, together with the wife, survive him. Two of the daughters are married, Mrs. Wm. Dittberner and Mrs. Henry Boysen. He also leaves a mother, five brothers and three sisters. The funeral will be held at the Green Garden church on Sunday at 1 o'clock. Rev. Just will preach the funeral sermon.
