Union Soldier in Civil War, brother of Phillip Zang, brewing magnate. Left Bavaria after death of parents and political unrest of the times. Arrived in New York June 5, 1852. Was a mill wright and varnish maker in New York; received U.S. citizenship 1959. Enlisted 39th NY Volunteers May 17, 1961. He fought for his adopted country at Bull Run, Cross Keys, Harpers'Ferry and Gettsburg where he was wounded. Military record is annotated "distinguished service." Became hearing impaired from his military service. Joined his brother in Denver after discharge and was involved in Denver's first brewery as well as real estate. Was apparently living with his brother, Phillip, at the time of his death. Rather tall for his times, 6'1", he never married.
