EVELYN "Lolly" ZANE CHAPIN
Evelyn Laura Zane Chapin, 87, of Merriam, Ks passed away Sept. 8, 2008 at the Kansas City Hospice House in the presence of her daughters, Jan and Cookie, after a valiant struggle with declining health.
Evelyn ("Lolly to family and friends) was born on Feb. 2, 1921 at Bethany Hospital in Kansas City, Ks, the eldest daughter of Clifford B. and Eula B. Zane. She was proud to have been the first incubator baby at that hospital, thanks to the ingenuity of her doctor who used light bulbs and a basket to keep her warm. Every day or so, one of the light bulbs was removed.
She grew up in KCK, and graduated from Wyandotte High School and Kansas City Business College. In 1941, she met and married Earl F. Chapin, also of KCK. During WWII, Evelyn and their six-week old infant daughter, Jan, bravely rode a train loaded with troops for three long days and nights to relocate to San Diego, where Earl was serving in the US Navy. During this sojourn, a young military officer generously gave his lower berth to Evelyn and her infant for their comfort. After the war, the family returned home to KCK, where their second daughter, Carolyn (Cookie) was born. Evelyn had not dared to travel by train again until last year, at the age of 86 in Alaska, with both daughters and their husbands in tow.
As a child, Evelyn and her family attended Oakland Park Baptist Church. She loved being a Girl Scout Troop leader at Junction Grade School, and serving as a Sunday School teacher, youth leader, and church treasurer at First Baptist Church of Highland Crest, where she was a charter member. In 1988, she and Earl joined First Baptist Church of Shawnee. Although busy raising their daughters, Evelyn also managed to work full time jobs as a billing clerk, first at Scott Motors and the Scott Lincoln-Mercury for many years.
She was a fourth great-granddaughter of Wyandot Chief Tarhe, signer of the Treaty of Greenville 1795, which was drafted to forever ensure peace between first nations and Euro-American settlers in Ohio. She was a respected Elder of the Wyandot Nation of Kansas.
Earl and Evelyn enjoyed extensive travel, starting out in an 8'X 8' tent in the early 1950's in Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park, Co. They graduated to their first travel trailer in 1975. They both loved any camping trip that was suggested, especially with family and friends.
Evelyn will be remembered fondly for her sense of humor, loving and generous nature, and unwavering faith and love of Jesus Christ.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 63 years, Earl, her brother Robert I. Zane, infant twin brother, two infant brothers and her faithful beagle Muppy.
Evelyn is survived by her two daughters and families: Daughter Janith K. and husband Edward English; grandchildren Darren Zane English , Martin L. English (and wife Cynthia), and Tanya R. English and great-granddaughter Taylor English-Catlett. Daughter Carolyn (Cookie) and husband Ron Stapp, grandchildren Stephanie K. (and husband Richard) Bennett, and Jonathan David (and wife Rae) Stapp, and four great-grandchildren, Parker and Macy Bennett, and Samantha and Blake Strapp. Evelyn's sister, Gladys May and husband Ted Smith, and brother-in-law Paul Eugene Chapin. Numerous nieces and nephews, and cousins also survive Evelyn.
