Major Raul Zamora, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), 75, passed away peacefully on Nov. 22, 2012 at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, after a courageous battle with Chronic Kidney Disease.
He was born Sept. 6, 1937 in Raymondville, Texas. Raul spent his first 13 years of his life living on a large cattle ranch. He always looked fondly on his youth and remembered his horse Jack. Raul graduated from Raymondville High School with high honors and then went on to graduate from South West Texas State College in San Marcos, TX with a degree in secondary education. Upon graduation, Raul was commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the U.S. Air Force through the college ROTC program.
During his time in college, he married his beloved high school sweetheart, Carmen. They were married for almost 52 years, and have five children.
Raul began his Air Force career on Feb. 1963 as a Personnel Officer at England Air Force Base in Alexandria, LA, and retired 21 years later at Hurlburt Field, FL as an Intelligence Officer. During his time in the military, he was sent on several assignments and one remote assignment to Vietnam. Although he did not want to be away from his family, he understood the importance of helping the people of Vietnam as a Liaison Officer. After retiring from the Special Operations School as an instructor, Raul began his second career in teaching.
In 1984, Raul began teaching government and economics at Crestview High School. He taught for 20 years before retiring from education. Mr. Zamora found teaching very rewarding; many students have never forgotten him. During his retirement years, students still kept in touch.
Raul Zamora, retired Major and educator joined his father, Guadalupe Zamora, Sr.; his mother Maria Meza Zamora; his brothers Roberto, Manuel, Guadalupe, Jr. and Rogerio in the Lord's House.
He is survived by his wife, Carmen; three daughters, Cynthia Wrenn, Debbie and husband Neal Tate, and Bernadette Taylor; two sons, Raul Zamora Jr., and Daniel E. Zamora; and seven grandchildren, Brittany Tate, Trevin Tate, Joseph Zamora, Alex Taylor, Jackson Wrenn, Jayden and Samuel Zamora.
