TAYLOR - A 53-year-old Taylor man, who grew up in Rockdale and graduated from RHS in 1970, died Saturday afternoon when his single-engine airplane crashed near Circleville.
Clayton Young died at 4:31 p.m. 100 yards east of the Texas 95-FM 1331 intersection, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The Williamson County DPS report concluded that Young, an experienced pilot, was flying at low altitude, with friends on the ground looking up when they saw the aircraft strike power lines, severing a wing, then strike the ground and catch fire.
According to the DPS, Young was flying a vintage Stearman D35 biplane, a model produced by Boeing during and immediately after World War II. Among its components are a frame partially made of wood and fabric-covered wings and fuselage.
After graduating from high school, Young moved to Taylor and established a plumbing contacting company.
He leaves behind a family that includes four children. A memorial fund for the family has been established at City National Bank of Taylor. Those interested in donating may contact Carla Scruggs at the bank.
A memorial service for Young was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor.
