Darwin E Young, of Pleasant Hill, IA, died on Monday, February 1, 2016 at Taylor House. He was 86.

He was born on September 20, 1929 in Macksburg, IA to Clarence and Kathryn Young. Darwin was raised on a farm near Truro with five brothers and a sister.

He served four years in the Air Force and was stationed in Africa, France and the USA.

Upon his discharge he returned to his job at Anderson Erickson Dairy where he worked until his retirement 38 years later. Shortly after he was hired he met his future bride, Gretchen Gustafson, in the cooler.

They were married in 1955 and the following year added daughter, Denise, to their family.

Together they enjoyed camping, boating and in later years their house on Holiday Lake. Darwin loved auctions and flea markets and was an avid collector of anything related to AE Dairy. He and Gretchen enjoyed traveling to Europe and Scandinavia and especially enjoyed their trips to Sweden to visit Gretchen's relatives; Darwin soon became a "converted Swede". Darwin loved his family and was especially fond of his great grand children. His face would instantly light up when any of the kids would come to visit.

Darwin is survived by his wife, Gretchen; daughter, Denise (Rick) Johnson; granddaughters, Beth (Chad) Marchant and Anna (Roland) Bedard; great-grandchildren, Christian and Kathryn Marchant and Parker Bedard; siblings, Dean (Enid), Dwight (Susan), Wayne (Jo), Wyman (Janice), MaryAnn (Gerold) Olson, and Wesley (Joan) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, February 8 at Urban Heights Covenant Church.

Memorial donations may be made in Darwin's name to Urban Heights Covenant Church.
