Wife of John Harned. Daughter of Newton C. York and Mary Eliza Layton
THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT
Thursday, December 19, 1929
Sarah York, daughter of Newton and Mary York, was born near Bloomington, Ill., December 22, 1846, and died in Derby, Iowa, on December 11, 1929, aged 82 years, 11 months and 20 days.
When she was two years of age she came to Iowa with her parents where they homesteaded a farm in Marion county. Here she grew to young womanhood. She was converted in her early teens and joined the Methodist church.
At the age of 20, she was married to John Harned, a neighboring farm boy. They bought a farm near her father's home and here they lived until they received their call to the ministry in 1875. For thirty years she filled the position of a minister's wife most faithfully and unselfishly.
After their retirement from the active ministry they bought a little home in Derby, Iowa, where they lived until the death of her husband in 1921. Since that time she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. C. J. Johnson.
She was the mother of eight children, Cora Esther, Mary Elizabeth and Thomas Newton, died while small children. Those living are William C. Harned, of Marshfield, Oregon; Michael H. Harned, of Porterville, California; Emory O. Harned, of Manhattan, Kansas; John S. Harned, of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. C. J. Johnson, of Derby, Iowa.
She also leaves fifteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren, one brother, J. H. York, of Minden, Nebraska, and one sister, Mrs. H. R. Snyder, of Knoxville, Iowa.
She has been bedfast for seven months. Through all this time she has been so patient and uncomplaining, always so full of thanks for the least service or kindness shown to her. Her last few weeks were full of praise and thanksgiving to her Heavenly Father.
On the evening of December 11th she quietly went to sleep to waken in the Better World, where she will spend her 83rd birthday Dec. 22nd. Hers was a life of service, freely and willingly given.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Friday afternoon, December 13, at two o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Ida Roberts, assisted by Rev. Larrick and Rev. Nesbitt, of Seymour, Iowa. Interment was made in the Derby cemetery.
The deepest of sympathy from innumerable friends is extended to the bereaved daughter and all the relatives.
