James, age 24, enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 27 September in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina. He was mustered as a Private in Company G, 25th North Carolina Infantry. He is listed as a prisoner of war on 6 April 1865 in Farmville, Virginia; confined 8 April 1865 in Newport News, Virginia. Took Oath of Allegiance on 27 June 1865 and released the same at Newport News, Virginia.

Died sometime after 5 April 1892 when he applied for his Confederate Pension and before the 1900 Federal Census.
