Ernest M. Yerks, 81, New Haven, died yesterday at home.
The Milan Center native was a 45-year educator in the East Allen Schools district. He began as a teacher at Milan School and later became its principal. At one time he was principal of Jefferson and Jackson townships and Hoagland schools. That job gained him the reputation of being a "circuit principal."
He continued as a school administrator with the formation of the East Allen County Schools from their independent districts until his retirement in 1974. He was a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association and life member of the national Parents-Teachers Organization.
Surviving are his wife, Alma M., and a daughter, Marilyn Harp of Kendallville.
Services are 10 a.m. Thursday in Woodburn Missionary Church, with burial in Scipio Cemetery. There is no calling in E. Harper & Son Funeral Home.
Preferred memorials are gifts to Visiting Nurse Service & Hospice Foundation or the church.
