Catharin Imogene Yates, 82, of Valley died Tuesday evening, June 29, 2004, at Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.
Funeral services were Friday, July 2, at 4 p.m. at Plant City Baptist Church in Lanett with the Revs. Jim Abbott and Ben Hewitt officiating.
Mrs. Yates is survived by two daughters, Vicki Y. Cooper of Valley andAnnette Meadows of Virginia Beach, Va.; five grandchildren; 10great-grandchildren; two sisters, Verne Troutman of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Judy Franzone of Powder Springs, Ga.; one sister-in-law; and many nieces
and nephews on both sides of the family.
Born Aug. 9, 1921, in Wadley, Mrs. Yates was the daughter of the late Geneva Ann Brockton McGill and Henry Frank Blankenship. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Hamilton Yates of Valley, and her siblings, Eugene Blankenship of Glendale, Milford Blankenship and Virginia McVay of Lanett, Deward Blankenship of Valley, Eston Wise of Kinston and Marlin Blankenship of Orlando, Fla.
Mrs. Yates retired from West Point Pepperell, where she was employed for 36 years as a receptionist/PBX operator, payroll clerk, accounts receivable clerk and lab clerk. She was a member of Plant City Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher for more than 60 years, a teacher for Training Union and leader for the Young Women's Auxiliary. She helped establish the Women's Missionary Union at Plant City and at Shawmut First Baptist Church. Mrs. Yates served as president of the WMU at Plant City for 18 years. In 1992, she compiled and wrote the book, "Fifty Years at Plant City Baptist Church." Mrs. Yates taught many study courses at most of the Baptist churches in the Valley area. After retirement from West Point Pepperell, she became a substitute teacher for the Chambers County School System, where she taught almost daily for more than 10 years. Mrs. Yates was affectionately known as "Honey Mama" and was loved by many students.
Flowers or memorials to Plant City Baptist Church will be accepted.
