Virginia Yancey Hurd, 89, of Savannah, Georgia, died Friday, March 12, 2010, at Azalealand Nursing Home. She was born January 3, 1921 in Bluefield, West Virginia, and had been a resident of Savannah for more than 60 years. She was the daughter of the late, Benjamin F. Yancey and Nita French Yancey.
Jenny is survived by her son, Arnold H. Hurd, III and his wife, Carol of Marietta, Georgia; one grandson, Richard S. Hurd of Memphis, Tennessee; and one sister, Jane Yancey of Bluefield, West Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold H. Hurd, Jr.; and her daughter, Judy Hurd Gordon; brother, Benjamin F. Yancey, Jr.; and sisters, Freda Nelson and Ruth Francis.
Virginia, or Jenny as she was known to everyone, was a graduate of Beaver High School in Bluefield and a graduate of Concord College in Athens, West Virginia. She postponed her college graduation to teach during World War II. She was a mother and grandmother in addition to being a military wife for over 20 years. She was a member of the Christian Church and was active in the Hunter Army Airfield Chapel serving as a member of the choir, Sunday school teacher and youth director. In her service to the chapel she touched many lives.
Services were entrusted to Fox and Weeks Funeral Home of Savannah, Georgia.
