Birth: Sep. 2, 1944
Death: Aug. 4, 2010

Susan Yancey Whitaker, wife of Dr. William G. Whitaker III, passed away on Wednesday, August 4, 2010, surrounded by her loving family.
Susan was born on September 2, 1944, in Columbia, South Carolina, the second daughter of Ida and Don Yancey. The family moved to Augusta, GA and subsequently to Atlanta in 1949 where her father became president of Yancey Bros. Co.
Susan attended Morris Brandon elementary school, Northside High School, and The Lovett School, where she was a member of the first graduating class in 1962. She made her debut with the Atlanta Debutante Club in 1963. Susan graduated from The University of Georgia in 1966, where she was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority. That same year, Susan and Bill married. They were married for forty-four years.
Susan began her career as a teacher at Lovett and remained a volunteer there for many years. She loved helping people and was a long-time volunteer at Piedmont Hospital and a member of the Atlanta Junior League.
Susan was blessed with many friendships and was loved by all. She was fondly known for her loving kindness, strong spirit and selfless actions. Her family, and her love for her grandchildren, was the focus of her life over the last decade.
Susan was a devout Christian and loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She and Bill were active members of The Church of the Apostles. Susan also attended and supported the Engrafted Word Ministries Bible Study group for 30 years.
Surviving Susan are her husband Bill; two daughters and sons-in-law; Elise Whitaker Googe and Vernon Eugene Googe III of Atlanta, Ida Yancey Whitaker Bradley and Daniel Howard Bradley, Jr. of Savannah and five grandchildren; John McCullough Googe, Elizabeth Jane Googe, Yancey Banks Bradley, Daniel Howard Bradley III and Susan Elise Googe. She is also survived by her two beloved sisters and their husbands; Donna Yancey Stephenson and James E. Stephenson of Alpharetta and Ellen Yancey Hunt and Dudley Hunt of Senoia; and several nieces and nephews . Susan is also survived by her aunts Locy Peters and Girline Hamilton, both of Columbia, SC and by her uncle, Goodloe H. Yancey III of Atlanta.
We will all miss May May very much, but we are happy she has gone to be with the Lord and her beloved parents.
