Graduated Painesville High School (Painesville, Lake County, OH) 1899.
Graduated West Point 1907 as Second Lieutenant US Army.
Served with various regiments of infantry in Cuba, Texas, Georgia and Hawaii and with the Signal Corps in Hawaii. Aide-de-Camp to Brig. Gen. R. W. Hoyt 1911-1913; Major Infantry 1917 and assigned as Signal Officer Camp Lewis, Washington and 91st Div. Graduate Signal School A. E. F. Langres, France 1918. Served with 91st Div. in 1st Army Defensive Sector and the San Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne and Ypres-Lys Offensives. Decorations received from France: Croix de Guerre, Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, Officer of the Black Star.
After the Armistice he served in the Army of Occupation in the Rhineland commanding the Perimeter Guard of the American Bridgehead east of Coblenz. Returned to the U. S., March 1920 and retired due to disability August 1920. Active duty May 1921 as Professor of Military Science and Tactics at Los Angeles, CA.
