Betty Christina (Wulff) Lackey, Dunlap, Bates passed away on 31st January, 2014 at Birchview Memory Care Center. In her long life of 91 years she travelled full circle.

Betty was born to Christian and Nora Wulff on May 17, 1922. She grew up on her dad's dairy farm just off Utopia Road east of Sedro Woolley with her three sisters and brother. She loved her memories of growing up on this farm and it was on the farm she learned to work and play hard.

In 1929 Betty's mother died. To help out she learned to bake bread on the 'old wood stove' at an early age. She said the first bread was like river rocks, but everyone ate it and no one dared complain. Her bread improved and it was her wonderful bread and pie baking that would serve her well later in life.

Saturday was market day for Pop. The kids often went with him and as they got older they would always attend a movie in SW. If they stayed home the kids would hitch up the horse to the wagon and ride as fast as they could through the countryside. They ahd to be sure to return home before Pop arrived though!

Betty attended first through eighth grades at the Utopia School. She attended Sedro Woolley High School and was elected freshman class secretary in 1936. She graduated from SWHS in 1940. In 1941 she had the honor of becoming the 1941 Queen to the Sedro Woolley Fourth of July celebration.

During WWII Betty moved to California and worked as a dispatcher dispatching army cadet pilots and their training pilots. There she met her first husband, Les Lackey. They were married for a short time when Les' plane went down over India on April 5, 1945. Betty was devastated and returned home to be with her family.

It was while working at the old Woodworth's store in Mount Vernon that she met Claude Dunlap. They were married on May 5, 1947, and had three children - Linda, Tom and Susan. Claude passed away in 1968.

Betty had grown up beside the Skagit River. She loved to fish so when she married Howard Bates they spent a great deal of time fishing and hunting in the Northwest. Howard passed away in 1981.

Betty worked many jobs over the years, but it was her job at Max Dale's Restaurant that she enjoyed the most. She used her baking skills and became their bread and pie baker. Max relied on her to open the kitchen at an early hour and have breads ready for the day. She worked there for 24 years.

Betty was predeceased by her parents Chris and Nora Wulff, her sisters Mary (Louie Stiles), Laura (Bill Litzenburg), Grace (Ted Huff) and her brother William Wulff (Jackie), and by her husbands Les Lackey, Claude Dunlap and Howard Bates. She was also predeceased by her two best friends Janet Hanstead (Nyberg) and Lois Rodosovich.

Betty is survived by her children Linda Krumins, Tom Dunlap (Debbie), and Susan Widen (Don); her grandchildren, Kuris Krumins, Kaira Krumins, Michael Dunlap, Mindy Dunlap, Heather Widen, Sarah Orlich (Devon), and Ryan Widen (Brianna), and many great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Betty's life will be announced at a later date in the Skagit Valley Herald.
